At A-Level, mathematics becomes increasingly connected. Algebra supports calculus, trigonometry appears throughout Pure Mathematics, and unfamiliar problems require students to decide which ideas to use rather than simply repeat a familiar method.
Success depends on secure foundations, flexible thinking and the confidence to make connections between topics.
New mathematics is much easier to learn when it rests on secure knowledge.
I identify gaps that may be limiting progress and strengthen the underlying understanding rather than simply working around them.
Students are encouraged to understand why a method works as well as how to carry it out.
Many capable students know the required mathematics but do not always recognise when or how to apply it.
We work on unfamiliar problems, mathematical reasoning and choosing appropriate approaches — developing the ability to move from “I know this method” to “I recognise when this mathematics is useful.”
